Review of NEO Dali 2 Brown (N016)

Design & Colour: 10/10

NEO Dali 2 Brown (model code N016) is a great design for everyday wear. The colour is a perfect match for my dark brown Asian eyes. This design is superbly natural-looking - my eyes genuinely look like they're my own. The enlarging effect is subtle, and you definitely won't get that alien-eyed oggled look with these lenses. I would definitely recommend this design if you don't wear full-on makeup all the time, but just want something to brighten up your natural eyes. Random people have given compliments like, "Oh, you actually have pretty eyes!" haha =D. However, if you need something bold, you might find the Dali 2 Brown too "invisible."

Compared with the original version of the NEO Dali Brown (Sweet Chocolate, model code N013), I actually like this one more. The reason is because the design reaches more towards the centre, and the pigmentation is denser as well. This means that, when you look to the side, there is no "halo" effect which makes it evident that the lenses are sliding on the eye.

Enlargement: 6/10

As one of those natural-looking lenses, this design offers little enlargement. It offers just a slight amount of enhancement, makes you look a bit younger and cuter. There is definitely no anime dolly-eyed thing going on here. Compared with GEO Annex Ring Brown, this one enlarges less. As said before, the effect Dali 2 Brown gives is extremely believable, and no one will be able to detect that you're wearing circle lenses unless, of course, they're knowledgeable about these lenses in the first place.

Comfort: 10/10!!!

The comfort of NEO Vision lenses is absolutely fantastic. I've been wearing these lenses almost every day for a month and have absolutely no complaints about them whatsoever. They feel like nothing on my eyes, and the amazing thing is that I can wear these for the entire day, forget about them and not need any eye drops. The superior comfort of NEO Vision lenses makes them great for students, office workers in dry air-conditioned environments and travelling. As a matter of fact, I'm going to take these with me on my vacation soon.

Review of Dolly Eye Cat Eyes Midnight Banquet Brown (by Seeshell Lensmam)

This is just a quick review of the Dolly Eye Cat Eyes Midnight Banquet Brown (yes, what a mouthful!) produced by Lensmam (the Seeshell company).

I've been wearing this design in and out for around 2 months and can definitely give this product a positive rating from what I've experienced.

Seeshell Lensmam is not a super-popular manufacturer like GEO, EOS, Dueba, etc. They are mainly known for only one design: the Dizon Eye (aka Seeshell) series that was allegedly worn by Japan top model Leah Dizon. Two years ago when I first started wearing their lenses, I thought the quality was average. Their lenses were not as comfortable as GEO lenses, and the pigmentation was not superb either. However, I sampled their products at the beginning of this year and must say that they have exponentially improved. Now, their lenses are thinner than GEO's (but not as much as NEO Vision's). They are so soft that they almost "crumple" on the finger. The company has added many beautiful and unique designs as well, one of which definitely is this Cat Eyes design.

DESIGN AND COLOUR: 7/10

As I said before, the design is super unique; from a distance, it definitely gives a dolly/oggly cat eyed effect. The pigmentation is superb, as these lenses are opaque (but not enough to be an unnatural blob of colour). I quite like the beige-ish, warm-toned brown colour of this design. However, it can look unnatural to people when they look at your eyes closely. It has the dashed limbal ring which resembles that of the NEO Vision Glamour and Queen series, except the lines for the Cat Eyes are thicker, darker and bolder. In sunlight, it will be obvious that you are wearing colour contacts. I wouldn't recommend this one for everyday wear; it's more suitable for parties, clubbing, special occasions, etc. The Cat Eyes series is definitely more on the bold side than on the natural side.

ENLARGEMENT: 7/10

The manufacturer lists the diameter as 14.5mm, but the pattern does not reach all the way to the edge of the lens. Thus, the actual diameter of the design is more like 14.2 mm. For me, this is a great diameter because it does not give the creepy huge-eyed dolly look, but is sufficient to give just the right amount of enhancement. In this aspect, this lens does not give the anime eyes look that most circle lenses do.

Comfort: 9.5/10

These new Seeshell lenses are incredibly comfortable, more so than GEO lenses. Wore these for 6 - 7 hours without need for eye drops. With GEO lenses, I sometimes had tired, dry eyes after a night of partying; didn't experience that with these ones. I'll give this one 9.5/10 because I gave GEO 9/10 in my review of the Annex Ring Brown. 10/10 is reserved for NEO, whose thinness and comfort are (for now) unmatched.

Newly Designed Website

We recently changed the layout and look of our web site. It's now easier to navigate. All the brands and series are listed in an organised click-and-hide menu tree on the right sidebar, which also displays all the diameters of the series since we saw that a lot of customers were trying to browse our catalogue according to diameter. The right sidebar is also equipped with the Twitter news feed so that any side updates are visible no matter which page you're browsing. Instead of the disorganised mess that it previously was, the drop-down header menu now has new tabs that neatly group pages into "Information" and "Features" of our web store.

New Circle Lens Designs

The circle lens market in Asia has been evolving at a super-high pace for the past half-year. New designs are coming out every 2 weeks. It is so hard to keep up with all the releases, even for someone who works in this industry!

I wanted to share some new designs here. I think that a lot of them are Vassen OEM label products; they're not on Vassen's official website yet because they're either custom/commissioned designs or the manufacturer is too slow in updating their website (which, as we know with most manufacturers including GEO and Dueba, is true).

Just as a note, all of these new releases are 15.0mm diameter. 15.0mm is the trendy diameter nowadays. The promo pics say 17.8, 18.0, etc. mm because, in Asia, we measure the push-flat diameter (by actually laying the lens out on a ruler and measuring the diameter of the printed part). But converted into the curved diameter typically used by "Western" shops, they are all 15.0mm. Maybe I should make a blog post about the diameter conversions later.

Vivian Bride (?) Series

Yeah, the official name translates into "Bride"...there are really funky names out there nowadays.

Wow, these remind me a lot of the GEO Bambi Princess Mimi series! Same kind of bold spiked black limbal ring and yellowish blending colour surrounding the pupil hole. Looking at the promo pictures, I think I might even like them more than the Princess Mimi because it looks a lot more natural and wearable. And they come in the fully colour range too! Very curious as to how they would compare to the Mimi when worn.

Komi Look Vaidurya Series

First of all, what an enchanting name. I wonder how they name these series. "Vaidurya" certainly is not a word that most people know (a search on Google says it means Lapis Lazuli in Sanskrit). But I guess it is a memorable word.

Anyway, these are four-tone lenses. I must say that the design appeals to me, especially the green; the colours look iridescent. I wouldn't be brave enough to wear these casually though; they look more like costume lenses to me.

Show-Mix Mystery Series

I'm not bold enough to wear these, but they do look quite interesting. It's quite cool how they incorporated actual fine glitter into the design; gives new meaning to eyes that "sparkle," huh? And the lenses in the 3rd pic remind me of the Vivian 3 tone or Forest series...but on steroids!

On now onto the most bizarre set of promo pics ever... =S

Coco-eye Diamond 3 Tone Series (LOVE LOVE LOVE !!!)

OMG, this series looks so cool! I really really want to get my hands on a pair of these despite the 15.0mm diameter. The design looks amazing and so much livelier than the original 2-tone diamond design! What do you think? Would you buy it if we stocked these? Price range will probably be in the high 20s to low 30s though.

And now for some designs which I find not that appealing...

Harry Potter Series

This is a Dreamcon OEM label product. I don't like the design; it looks like a lot of black and not enough colour. And the little knobs/spokes kind of creep me out.

Mumeo Butterfly Series

This one is too scary for me. Maybe only good for costume purposes if you're dressing up as some fairy queen of the Amazon or something. The thought of insects on my eyes is too frightening!

Hello Kitty Series

Oh wow, circle lens designs are getting CRAZY! Sorry but I'd have to say this one is the ugliest design I've seen. It is downright creepy. I'm not sure which market this design appeals to. What were they thinking when they made this?!

The Cafe lenses (Macchiato, Waffle & Latte) look quite unique and interesting (not to mention their cute names)! I'm loving the Cafe concept; it sounds so refined and sophisticated unlike the "cute and dolly" concept which is getting kinda boring.

The XTRA Flower lenses are just copies of Vassen OEM lenses but I like the fact that GEO is doing this because the Vassen OEM designs aren't easy to come by since the manufacturer has a crazy MOQ.

Dolly Eye brand lenses

What do you think? Would you buy them if they were around $30 with free shipping and free case? Or do they look too similar to lenses that we can easily get nowadays?

Just had to show this pic...the manufacturer provides THE MOST ADORABLE packaging that I've seen for any contact lens! Reminds me of Tsubasa's Dollywink brand.

Any thoughts?

Comparing GEO Bambi Style Princess Mimi Series to Angelcolor Japan Bambi Series

I have received many emails asking about the difference between the GEO Bambi Style Princess Mimi series sold on Eyecandylens.com and the original Bambi Series from Angelcolor Japan. So here is a breakdown of the comparison.

Overview
As you probably know, both versions are produced by GEO Medical from South Korea. Angelcolor Japan is a company which buys GEO-manufactured lenses and repackages them under their own label (OEM). So both versions come from the same factory.

GEO has given exclusive distribution rights to Angelcolor for these lenses for sale only in Japan, so technically, lenses packaged under "Angelcolor" are the true Bambi lenses. However, GEO has made this series available to international retailers, giving it the name "Princess Mimi" to avoid infringing Angelcolor's Bambi trademark.

Between the Princess Mimi versions and the Angelcolor versions, the designs (excluding diameter differences) are identical. Both are equally pigmented and have the characteristic spiky-looking black limbal ring.

GEO has made several other subtle differences between the international Princess Mimi version and the Angelcolor Japan Bambi version to avoid copyright issues.

Diameter

Princess Mimi is 15.0 mm. While the diameter of the coloured portion is the same as the Angelcolor Bambi, the black limbal ring is thicker. The design reaches more towards the lens' edge.
Angelcolor Bambi is 14.2 mm, which is why when you see all the Japanese models wearing their Bambi lenses, none of them really appear bug-eyed. By the way, Japanese customers prefer "smaller" or more standard diameters actually; you rarely see anything that's above 14.5mm. 14.0mm is the most popular diameter for lenses sold in Japan.

Duration

Princess Mimi are yearly lenses.
Angelcolor Bambi are quarterly lenses.

Prescriptions

Princess Mimi is available in P-0.00 ~ -6.00 (excluding Apple Green)
Angelcolor Bambi is only available in plano 0.00.

Base curve

Princess Mimi is 8.7, needed to accomodate the larger diameter
Angelcolor Bambi is 8.6

Packaging

Princess Mimi comes in GEO's standard vial with a fuchsia label.
Angelcolor Bambi comes in colourful pretty boxes. The Japanese love their packaging.

Contact Lens Solutions

I don't sell contact lens solution in my shop as it'd be highly uneconomical to ship since postage is determined by weight. However, I thought it'd be nice and appropriate to share some of my experiences about my favourite brands of solution out there.

OPTI-FREE Replenish & Express

Hands down OPTI-FREE is my favourite brand of contact lens solution. You know how when you put on contact lenses, you get that initial stinging sensation? Especially when it's early in the morning and your eyes are still sensitive to light? I've never gotten that with Opti-Free.
I also find that pre-soaking my lenses in Opti-Free makes my eyes less prone to dryness throughout the day. My eyes feel quite comfortable all day long. Sometimes, my lenses become blurry due to dryness, but I haven't experienced that with Opti-Free treated lenses.
I haven't noticed any difference in comfort levels between the Replenish and Express versions so they're pretty much the same for me. The Express is "express" because it's formula dissolves the protein deposits on the lenses for you so you don't have to manually rub your lenses, but I always rub my lenses (clean freak tendencies)...and it takes only like 5 more seconds anyway.
You can buy this solution at almost any optical store and drugstore here in North America. I always get the value pack one from Costco though. You guys from the US probably have a similar wholesale/bulk-packaging type store.

All in all, I highly recommend Opti-Free brand solution!

ReNu Multiplus

This brand is only so-so for me. In the morning, I sometimes experience the stinging sensation described earlier when initially putting on contact lenses. Also, I find that this solution doesn't help my eyes retain moisture as much as the Opti-Free brand ones do, so my lenses are prone to bluriness later in the day. I can't really think of any aspect in which this one wins over Opti-Free...maybe slightly cheaper price? Oh, and it's usually available as a free sample when you get clear prescripted contacts at your optical store.
I've seen this one in a value pack available at drugstores and Costco.

ReNu Fresh

I've had better experiences with this one than with the MultiPlus. ReNU Fresh keeps my eyes as comfortable throughout the day as Opti-Free does. No initial stinging sensation as well. However, I got blurry lenses sometimes, but only at the very end of the day (after 10+ hours of wearing the lenses...which you aren't supposed to do anyway). I think this is cheaper than Opti-Free, so more bang for your buck.
Get it at your local drugstore. I haven't seen this one in value pack format.

Circle Lenses: Whatever Happened To... ??

Since I wrote a post about what's in this year for circle lenses, I thought it'd be appropriate to talk about what's out. Circle lenses have come a long way since they were first made popular by Asian net idols in around 2005 - 2007. I first got addicted to them in 2008, and I think I've been in this industry long enough to observe the disappearance or evolution of certain trends with circle lenses.

So whatever happened to...

1. BIG, BLACK, BEADY DOLL EYES?

I remember this was like the #1 desired effect when looking for circle lenses! Every seller was emphasizing the opaqueness and largeness of black circle lenses and the dolly, teary/watery effect they would give you. This style was highly popularised by photos of ulzzangs like Kim Namji

I think this was the earliest modelled photo of circle lens I ever saw...also happened to be the photo that got me interested in circle lenses.

The lenses that promised this doll effect? The most popular ones were G&G BT01 and G&G IFax Black. Sounds nostalgic?

I think the popularity of these lenses lasted for a bit more than a year...until a lot of people started having black doll eyes and people realised that this look...

..was not so hot.

I think the two black lenses mentioned above are retired now. My personal experience with them was that people couldn't tell whether I was looking at them or behind them due to the largeness of the lens. Even when I shifted my eyes, it looked like I was looking at the same spot. I think that people eventually realised that this style looked soulless and just a tad eerie (can you imagine creepy haunted carousel music playing in the background looking at the pic above??). And after my brother said that looking at my eyes was like "looking into the vortex"...I decided to trash the lenses.

2. STARS/COMET & TEARS?

I remember the star/comet lenses were such great sellers in my store's early days (2008). Even some of my friends who never wore contacts before bought some cos they thought that they were so cool.

I actually still think these look kinda interesting, but I guess the death of their popularity was due to the fact that they're not something you can wear over and over again...else it starts becoming a bit tacky (especially when seen in sunlight). And now, there are also better, less artificial ways of making your eyes sparkle, e.g.:

Crystal i Blue

GEO Nudy Quarter Violet

For the Tear lenses though, I don't understand why they're not popular anymore. I mean...they're very natural looking and the highlights do make your eyes look very glistening and teary. I still like my pair a lot. Maybe people find the look too "anime"-ish for everyday wear? I dunno

3. 14.0mm Lenses? (what used to be standard size)

Ok this is one trend that I really really miss. All the manufacturers' new models are 14.5 mm and above nowadays; it's so hard to find something which is 14.0mm nowadays! 14.0mm enlargement is enough for me and I'm sure for a lot of other people too. Too bad some of the really appealing newer designs aren't available in 14.0, else I would go crazy and open like 100 pairs from my stock. =P

Top Circle Lens Trends of 2011

2010 and 2011 witnessed an explosion in the popularity of circle lenses. They are becoming more and more well known here in North America as Lady Gaga wore them (or some type of enlarging contact lens) in her Bad Romance music video and with the rising popularity of Youtube makeup artist Michelle Phan who wore a few circle lenses in her past videos. Circle lenses even have their own Wikipedia page now, and I bet at least 1 in every 30 people of ages 15 to 25 here will know what you're talking about when you mention "Asian contacts."

The circle lens manufacturers in Korea have been consistently innovating and coming out with new models to keep up with the increasing demand. Here are some of the trends I've noticed of the new products that've been recently released.

Three (and Four) Tone Lenses

So what do typical tri-tone lenses look like?

From L to R: Vivian 3 Tone Green, Bambi Sesame Gray, Super Nudy 3 Tone Violet, Tri-Color World Brown, Lucky Clover Grey (4 tone)

The three defining features:

Dark outer limbal ring: is either the classic black enlarging limbal ring or a darker hue of the base colour.
Base colour: main colour of the lens
Inner yellow-toned blending colour: surrounds the pupil hole. Has tones of yellow and orange which is typical of Western brands of colour contacts (e.g. Freshlook)

Why are 3 tone lenses so popular?

The black edge provides enlargement and definition. The base colour gives just the right degree of colour change, while the yellowish colour surrounding the pupil hole allows for superb blending with one's natural eye colour. All this in combination with the contact lens material itself which gives eyes a glossy look!

Here is how they look on eyes. As you can see, three tone lenses can be both smooth/natural and bold/vivid.

Lucky Clover Gray

Bambi Sesame Grey

I expect that they'll keep coming out with new three-tone designs to perhaps tap into the overseas market and compete with the likes of Bausch & Lomb, Acuvue, Freshlook etc. You think they have the potential? I think they certainly do as Korean designs of lenses are pretty unique and intricate!

BIGGER IS BETTER

This was GEO's official slogan of their Xtra series which all have 15.0mm diameters (as opposed to the regular 14.0mm).

With other manufacturers having released a whole slew of 14.5 and 15.0mm lenses (with purported 17.0 to 19.0mm "effects"), this has everyone thinking that bigger is better.

Popteen model Kumicky wearing Barbie King Candy Brown

Ok some things in life maybe bigger is better, but for circle lenses? Not sure I really dig this trend...the huge-eyed dolly look seems to be standard nowadays, so much so that these girls seem to look like carbon copies of each other! And these huge diameter contacts aren't for everyone, especially with people who already have big irises compared to the amount of sclera (white space) of their eyes. But for those who can pull it off, it looks really cute and will make people think you are 4 to 7 years younger than you actually are haha

Pink & Red Lenses

The first pink lens was released by either EOS or GEO last year, but they've taken the circle lens world by storm this year!

Pink

Everyone's raging about this colour! The shade of pink in question is a light peachy pink colour. Here are some of our most popular pink models:

From L to R: Super Nudy Quarter Pink, Sugar Candy Pink, Kirakira Dolce DM23 Pink

I love this trend! Maybe it has to do with my love of princessy, girly pink stuff but on the eyes, but the colour looks superb on the eyes! I thought it'd be creepy at first, but it actually turns out to be a nice shade of light beige. I think the colour is quite wearable and it'd look lovely with shimmery brown eyeshadow. It'd be a super cute look, perfect for spring!

Red

I think red lenses appeal mostly to cosplayers because I don't know how they'd be wearable in daily life. Don't know what to say about this, really, as I don't like the trend. Nonetheless, they're increasing in popularity.

Blythe Big Size Red

Review of GEO Annex Ring Brown [BC-102]

GEO Annex Ring Brown is one of the company's older designs. I started wearing circle lenses back in 2008 but didn't try this one until last year. This lens is definitely in my top 5!

Design and Colour:

The Annex Ring Brown gets a full 10 points from me. The colour matches my dark brown Asian eyes perfectly so, in sunlight, it doesn't look like I have something plastered on my eyeballs. I also like how it doesn't have a dark limbal ring so it doesn't look like my irises have been traced with a black line. I love the completely natural look. Full points for wearability - I wear these lenses on an (almost) daily basis, so I get full value for my money! haha

Enlargement:

Ok, the 8/10 is because these lenses don't give that gigantic-eyed dolly effect that a lot of people look for nowadays (like those 14.5, 15.0, etc mm ones). However, I really like the slight enlargement it gives - it's not too big and fake-looking and not too small. The degree of enlargement is, in the words of Goldilocks, just right. ^^ The difference is actually noticeable.

Comfort:

GEO is one of the most comfortable brands out there. However, the top brand for comfort in my books is NEO Vision (I sometimes forget I'm wearing their contacts at the end of the day heheh). For GEO lenses, as I said before, I can wear for 7 hours max. Sometimes, in lectures, I fall asleep with these lenses on (yes, a big mistake...avoid doing this as much as possible!), and require eye drops to moisten my lenses again.

Review of GEO Bambi Brown [WMM-304]

I glad that I finally got the chance to try on a pair of our latest hit product GEO Bambi Brown! Made popular by Japanese top model Tsubasa Masuwaka, Bambi Brown is all the rage in the circle lens world right now.

Design and Colour:

These lenses are FREAKING BOLD! Or maybe just bolder than what I'm used to since I'm used to wearing my GEO Annex Ring Browns everyday. Tsubasa's promo pictures are a pretty accurate representation of the colour. I think the limbal ring with the spokes looks quite nice. The main colour isn't the orange-y or yellowish brown that we're used to with the Angel and Nudy lenses, but is more of a reddish hazel. What makes these lenses really pop is the orange-yellow ring around the pupil hole. It's pretty opaque, so the colour still shows up well even in dim lighting (hotel room lighting in one of my photos below)

I didn't give 10 points for Design and Colour because I don't think these lenses are something you can wear every day. Maybe I'm more of a natural girl, but people will definitely know that you're wearing some eye colour (and size) enhancement of some sort, and I don't think you'll be able to get through the day without someone asking if you're wearing colour contacts, haha. I also don't think that anyone can pull off this look effortlessly. You'd have to complement them with a fair amount of eye makeup (false lashes) or be just be super gorgeous like Tsubasa.

For me, these are definitely "special occasion" lenses I would wear to parties and clubbing.

Enlargement:

The enlargement is INSANE! I was actually taken aback when I put in these lenses cos it was my first time trying 15.0mm ones and I'm used to 14.0mm. I didn't expect 1.0mm to make such a difference! I think these were a bit too large for me.

I did give 10/10 for enlargement, but I always stress this to circle lens first-timer clients: bigger is not always better! If your eyes naturally are small like mine, then these can potentially give you a bug-eyed look. Therefore, when purchasing circle lenses, make sure you take the proportion of your eyes' white areas to coloured areas into consideration.

Comfort:

Like regular GEO lenses. I definitely don't feel that the 7% increase in diameter sucks 7% more moisture out of my eyes. GEO doesn't rank at the top of my list in terms of comfort (a place occupied by NEO Vision!) because I find that I can only wear their lenses for 7 hours max before my eyes start getting tired and dry. I can wear NEO Vision for the whole day. Yeah, but I'm a bad example because you're only recommended to wear circle lenses for up to 6 hours at a time! I only wear my own lenses for longer cos I don't get home early. Make sure YOU practice proper hygiene to care for your eyes and lenses!

Overall:

Thumbs up from me! To be honest, it's not my favourite lens but I like the unique design and combination of colours. I really hope that GEO will make these in 14.0mm cos I think my eyes are too small to fit the 15.0mm diameter.
